Behind the Scenes: How We Booked Gary’s Economics for an event at Ekonomiska Museet
As someone who’s followed Gary Stevenson, better known as Gary’s Economics, for years, I have always admired his unwavering commitment to tackling wealth inequality. His message is clear and urgent: to address the ever-widening gap, we must tax the ultra-rich and rethink the structures that perpetuate economic divides. I’ve watched his channel religiously, not just as a fan, but as someone who believes these conversations need to happen everywhere, especially in spaces like Stockholm’s Ekonomiska Museet (Economics Museum).
How It Happened:
Earlier this spring, just as Gary announced a channel hiatus for him to take a holiday, I caught a small but exciting detail in his last video. He mentioned he would be passing through Sweden at some point this summer. My mind immediately started racing, thinking about the possibility of bringing his voice directly to our community, live and in person.
I headed straight to his website, hoping to find a way to reach out. There, he had written candidly that he receives a huge volume of requests and can’t respond to them all. But I noticed he also listed his manager’s email. It felt like a long shot, but I knew I had to try. So I sat down and crafted a pitch for an event at Ekonomiska Museet, explaining why Stockholm (and our audience) would benefit from hearing Gary’s perspective on wealth inequality and the urgent need for economic and tax reform.
To my surprise, Gary’s manager replied quickly. The answer was yes, maybe this could be possible, as long as I could coordinate everything within a month. Challenge accepted!
From that moment, it was a whirlwind of logistics, coordination with the museum, and a lot of excitement as the event came together. Seeing Gary take the stage and spark a passionate, thoughtful conversation about inequality was a true highlight for our team and community.
